Windsor Welcomes the World With a Spectacular Salute

Windsor, Ontario, 2/1/2006

Windsor, Ont. February 1, 2006 – The welcome lights will be on to invite the world to Windsor’s doorstep for the Big Game weekend, in the form of a spectacular riverfront light show, beginning this Thursday, February 2, after 6 p.m.

A colourful spectacle of moving beams of light will be projected into the night sky using 14 “Space Cannon” lamps at 7,000 watts each. By comparison, Casino Windsor’s permanent “Sky Tracker” lights use 2,500 watts and can be seen as far as the outskirts of the city on any clear night. These “‘Space Cannons” are identical to the 88 lamps that are used to create the World Trade Centre memorial in New York City every September 11, called the “Towers of Light.”

The salute will be situated along the riverfront, covering the Festival Plaza in front of Casino Windsor and stretching west past the foot of McDougall Ave into the Civic Terrace. Sponsored by Casino Windsor, this light exhibition will be created by PRG Lighting from Toronto and will be on display continuously between the hours of 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. from February 2 through to February 5. The lights will be carefully choreographed in a sequence and will not shine on any buildings in the downtown core.

"We are celebrating this international event and saluting our friends across the river for their success," said Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis. “This event is historical and this salute will elevate our role and place in the eyes of the world, “ he added.

Kevin Laforet, Casino Windsor’s President and CEO said, “We wanted to add some sparkle to all the efforts the city has undergone to prepare for the big weekend. We found a brilliant way to showcase our community with an extra large light show for an extra large event.”

A lighting ceremony will take place in the Festival Plaza at 6:10 pm on Thursday, February 2 with Mayor Francis and Kevin Laforet to launch the light show.
